Take a trip back in time to an era when mountain bikes weren’t banned from any trails, and only their tires needed to be pumped up. Specialized had some of the earliest and finest production mountain bikes. This 1984 lugged made-in-Japan Stumpjumper is not only a survivor, but ready to be your garage (or better yet, wall) queen (or king). The pics are really what you want to look at, but check out the Tommaselli brake levers, Specialized “flag” touring crank, Suntour LeTech derailleurs, Suntour thumbshifters, Saturae HX28 rims, hubs, quick releases, X-1+2 handlebar, and slingshot stem. Deore XT brakes. That’s how it came, as Specialized used what it had access to throughout the model year. The only thing we know isn’t original are the vintage tires – the Crossroads came off another Stumpy. This bike had a bit of top tube rust so that got some new paint, the rest looks original with a few minor touch-ups. Looks amazing for its age. Specialized designer Jim Mertz saw the bike and said, “I designed this one!” Built for a bigger rider, but keep in mind bikes weren’t as long as they are these days. Probably want to be 6′ or so to ride this, but anyone who appreciates vintage rides from this era can own it and show it! The parts alone are worth the asking price, but we don’t want to part it out.
