1992 Specialized Stumpjumper 21 Speed Mountain Bike. 18″ center to top seat tube, 16 3/4″ center to center seat tube, 21 3/4″ top tube center to center, 28 3/4″ stand-over height (measured in the center of the top tube). 25 lbs. Could be called a medium. Lightweight double-butted Tange Prestige (Specialized Direct-Drive) steel frame and fork tubing. Original green apple metallic paint is in really nice condition and really pops in the sunlight. There are a few minor scratches, on the chainstay behind the crank and some light decal rub on the top tube from the rear brake cable, but overall very nice paint. I just finished this fresh custom-build using mostly original spec Specialized and black Shimano Deore LX parts (many NOS/New) where possible, with some modifications, mainly the wider-rimmed wheels and 2x double cyclocross crankset set up. The NOS Shimano UN-51 110mm bottom bracket with alloy non-driveside cup is perfect for the double chainring application as it improves chainline and also lowers the q-factor (distance arms are apart) from a traditional triple set-up. I also added a NOS Ritchey Force chromoly MTB stem to get the reach a little more stretched out than the short-ish factory reach, a common modifiction to these bikes in the day. I had the frame/fork/headset/saddle/seatpost saved for a build and always loved this model and color. This one is in such nice condition, I decided to do a build the way I wanted in the spirit of the original. The goal was to get the bike to present and ride in a manner that is greater than the sum of the parts. Functional art. Originally a Deore LX black groupset bike. I gathered up the Specialized and Shimano Deore LX parts over time, many NOS, and was able to build it very similar to the original factory build. The original Specialized “California Design” saddle is in mint condition and the Team Master Specialized skin wall tires are in great aesthetic and rideable shape for their age.
