1983 Early Specialized Stumpjumper MTB Lugged Vintage Beartrap Nitto Biplane collector’s limited edition mountain bike. One of the first years the Specialized Stumpjumper was produced and widely available was 1983. The sport of mountain biking originated in California and soon took the country by storm, but it all started with this bike. The first ever mountain bike, the 1981 Specialized Stumpjumper, featured a road bike style frame geometry but with a higher bottom bracket, longer chainstay, slack head tube angle, as well as clearance for 26×2.3″ tires. This 1983 example retains the same geometry with some slight changes in components. With the all new Stumpjumper, cyclists were no longer bound by paved roads and were enabled to travel paths less pedaled in mountain terrains to bring the sport to worlds unknown. This particular example comes in a sharp metallic gray color that is in amazing condition for its age. Minor scuffs and scratches are normal for its age and give the bike a distinguished patina that could only be developed after years of careful use. Outfitted with most of the original parts, only a few items have been replaced over the years. It comes with the famous motorcycle style brake levers, as flat bar brake levers were not widely available at the time. The Shimano friction shifters have a smooth yet tactile ratcheting mechanism. The simplicity of it attributes to its no nonsense utility. They just plain work. The original cantilever brakes have been outfitted with Kool Stop Salmon brake pads to offer maximum cantilever braking performance. The handlebar grips are made by Oury in the USA. Moving on to the the drivetrain of the bike, it is equipped with a Suntour Mountech groupset, Sugino crankset, 5 speed freewheel, and bear trap pedals. The wheels are the stock offering paired with Specialized 26″ slick tires. The only non-period-correct part is a replacement Specialized saddle that was taken off a 1991 Specialized Rockhopper that is honestly just serving as a placeholder. I recommend a Brooks B17 if you do end up replacing the saddle. This bike has been meticulously cared for over the years and it shows. Riding this bike will make you feel like you’re trailblazing new paths in the hills of San Francisco where mountain biking first started. You might even want this bike for nostalgic reasons because you used to be one of the first mountain bikers ripping on this very bike. This bike honestly is a great platform for a modern and neo-retro build. Put a 1×10 drivetrain and dropbars on it for the ultimate gravel touring setup even. The bike is definitely not limited by its tire clearance. Or maybe you want climb gravel fire roads or even crush the pavement streets in the city as it currently sits, this bike is for you! If you made it this far, thank you. I really do hope you enjoy this bike. Shipped via Fedex Ground.
